BAGGYS!

"I have protected myself from ever having to sell out by having nothing to sell out."
During the late 1980s- early 1990s baggies were so-called after their baggy clothes. They wore a mix of football shirts underneath bright psychedelic paisley print, bell bottoms and had Beatles haircuts. The scene was all about the music which fused psychedelic guitar with acid house dance. The varied bands associated with the scene all had a dancey drum beat in common. Prominent bands were Primal Scream, Stone Roses, Inspiral Carpets, Happy Mondays and The Charlatans. The baggy scene played homage to the 1960s innocence and optimism. They took the drug ecstasy, which had none of the introspection of acid, ecstasy makes people loved up and want to dance.

This scene is associated with Manchester or Madchester (named by the media) music scene, after the Sex Pistols in the 70s there was a lot of energy and bands such as The Smiths and the Buzzcocks came out in Manchester, the Manchester music scene was a really vibrant. The Madchester scene is synonymous with the record label, Factory records, as depicted in the film 24 hour party people in 2002. Factory records was set up in 1978 by Tony Wilson and Alan Erasmus, the first album they released was Unknown pleasures by Joy Division, when the lead singer Ian Curtis committed suicide the remaining members became New Order. The setting for the Madchester scene would be The Hacienda club run by Factory records and New Order. It was a legendary club, which saw the beginning of superstar DJs with queues around the blocks, although bands such as Birthday Party, the Smiths and Madonna had played there live. Famously, the Hacienda hemorrhaged money (a mixture of low entrance fees and clubbers spending their money on drugs off the bouncers instead of drinks) but it wasn’t about the money it was about the music. Eventually as the Manchester drug gangs fought for supremacy the club became more and more violent getting a nasty reputation in the media. This was spoiling the original spirit of the club where people just wanted to dance and have a good time.
